a web of nostalgic trust

SHORT STORY:

WINTER 2024: A WEB OF NOSTALGIC TRUST:

They are an odd group. They found themselves in an imposed proximity. It feels small, to people that are avoiding any connection.  As if they are part of the Doods, Watts & Salganic parallel universe. He is clearly one of them.
These events have an anchoring effect. In this world, perceived popularity becomes real popularity. He knows, he will share this space for less than an hour yet, no one seems to appreciate it’s finality. Following the social proof is the expectation here. It is asymmetry.
-“A crime fighting algorithm is apparently used to try and track down Bansky? Rosmo’s algorithm for operation Lynx. Did you know that? “, she said.
-“No, I did not”.
Everyone seems to have a short window for daily reflection time. This was that moment for him. He felt poorly equipped to be positive.
-“Ironically the easier anything gets to free our time, the more we waste it.”
-“AI has a net positive impact!” she said.
That is a dangerous statement to attach to anything! He thought and passed through his lips some questionable wine.
-“Expectations are important, they seem to be the essence.” Said someone that just joined this smaller group.
She took a step back. Is everyone in this group the same? No!  Should they receive the same accolades? No! But somehow they do by proximity. Only distance decay, can appease her. This is, geo-framed emotion of disgust to the other and not to the self.
-“The unique ability to distinguish patterns sets each one of us aside from the next person. That cannot be replicated by an algorithm”. She almost shouted.
-“AI should be a guardian and not a guard”.
-“ Yes, of course but nothing is random because people are predictable and so is your digital shadow”.
In response he remembered the delight of purchasing dvd’s of movies with his weekly supermarket shop. He turned his head to look back and said:
-“Could we have used a neural network to predict the level of discontent in this room?”
How can you measure and quantify quality, and is the truth somewhere between?  It is the edge for both the bad and across it, the good”.
The recidivism of entitled behavior is 100%.
What is your threshold of doubt? What do you find acceptable? Do you accept that you have erred? Do you even know when you have done so?
